The Election Commission of India on Thursday directed the Delhi Chief Electoral Officer to investigate complaints filed by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) against BJP leader Parvesh Verma and allegations regarding alterations to the electoral roll in the New Delhi Assembly constituency.
The Commission’s action followed a meeting in which Delhi Chief Minister and AAP leader Atishi, along with other party members, presented their concerns to the poll authority.
The Election Commission instructed the CEO to look into the complaints, determine the facts, and take “immediate appropriate action” in line with the Model Code of Conduct and electoral laws. The Commission also requested a report on the actions taken.
AAP has accused Verma, the BJP’s candidate for the New Delhi seat, of violating the Model Code of Conduct, alleging bribery and money distribution to voters. AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal called for a raid on Verma’s residence to search for “illicit funds.” Kejriwal also claimed that local election officials were complicit in assisting the BJP’s actions, calling for their suspension.
“We have full faith in the Election Commission and hope it will take appropriate action against these illegal activities,” Kejriwal said.
The Delhi Assembly elections will take place on February 5, with counting of votes will be on February 8. Kejriwal, who has served as the MLA for New Delhi since 2013, faces stiff competition in a high-stakes triangular contest. The BJP has fielded Parvesh Verma, son of former Delhi Chief Minister Sahib Singh Verma, while Congress has nominated Sandeep Dikshit, son of three-term Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit.
