Police in Manipur reported the recovery of the bodies of two Meitei men in Jiribam on Tuesday morning, following a gunfight that left 10 suspected militants dead the day before. The deceased have been identified as Laishram Barel Singh (63) and Maibam Keshwo Singh (71).
The clash occurred in Jakuradhor and Borobekra, areas close to the Pherzawl district, predominantly inhabited by the Hmar community. According to officials, the gunfight began after armed men believed to be from the Hmar community attacked a CRPF post at Jakuradhor and nearby Borobekra police station on Monday afternoon. Earlier that day, local residents said suspected militants targeted homes and shops in Meitei settlements.
Following the violence, police stated that six people who had been living in a relief camp at the Borobekra police station are now missing. Reports indicate that Laishram Barel Singh and Maibam Keshwo Singh were among 10 individuals from the camp who disappeared after Monday’s incident.
Yurembam Sanjoy Singh, a local resident, mentioned that 118 people had sought refuge at the relief camp, which was established for residents affected by violence and arson in June. Most of the displaced Meitei residents from the area are now staying in relief camps in Jiribam district headquarters, approximately 20 km away.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation amid concerns for the missing individuals and escalating tensions in the region.
