Ahead of assembly elections in Maharashtra and Jharkhand, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday accused the Congress party of making “fake promises” to voters, asserting that the party stands “badly exposed” for pledging goals it “will never be able to deliver.”

Modi’s comments came as he seized on Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge’s recent directive urging state units to make only budgeted promises to avoid fiscal strain, following reports of financial difficulties in Congress-led states.

“The Congress party is realising the hard way that making unreal promises is easy but implementing them properly is tough or impossible,” Modi posted on his X account, stating that grand old party is misleading people with unfulfilled pledges. “Now, they stand badly exposed in front of the people!” he added, targeting the fiscal health and development status of Congress-ruled states like Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka, and Telangana.

PM Modi warned voters against what he termed a “Congress-sponsored culture of fake promises,” saying, “We saw recently how the people of Haryana rejected their lies and preferred a government that is stable, progress-oriented and action-driven.” He claimed that a vote for Congress amounts to “non-governance, poor economics, and unparalleled loot,” tagging his posts with the hashtag “fake promises of Congress.”

In a series of post on X, he further accused Congress of “terrible deceit” in not delivering on promises, which he said harms the poor, youth, farmers, and women, while existing schemes face cuts.

In Karnataka, Congress leaders are “busier in intra-party politics and loot,” according to PM Modi, rather than focusing on development. He also pointed to delayed salaries in Himachal Pradesh and Telangana farmers waiting for promised loan waivers.

“Previously, in Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan they promised certain allowances which were never implemented for five years. There are numerous such examples of how the Congress works,” he said.

The Maharashtra Assembly polls will be held on Nov 20 while Jharkhand will go to polls in two phases on November 13 and November 20. The counting of votes for both states will take place on November 23.
