Akshay Kumar starrer Toilet: Ek Prem Katha was one of the few movies of 2017 that didn’t disappoint the audience. Not only did the movie mint a good amount of money at the box-office but also gave a strong social message to the viewers. Looks like the film’s effect was felt outside India too – at the highest echelons of corporate America. On Tuesday evening, philanthropist and business mogul Bill Gates listed six stories and articles from around the world that inspired him in an otherwise “tough year” and Akshay Kumar and Bhumi Pednekar movie Toilet: Ek Prem Katha made it to Bill Gates’ list of inspirational stories for its message of spreading awareness about the problem of sanitation in India.

“3/ “Toilet: A Love Story,” a Bollywood romance about a newlywed couple, educated audiences about India’s sanitation challenge,” Bill Gates said in a tweet. The movie was about a new newlywed couple who were living in an under-developed village and problems arise when a woman is expected to walk to the fields every morning to do her business. The film was applauded for highlighting the sanitation problems that the country faces at large and was also supported by various sectors of the government for spreading the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan message.

Based on true events, the film starred Akshay Kumar and Bhumi Pednekar in lead roles along with Anupam Kher and Divyendu Sharma. Toilet: Ek Prem Katha was seen by many as a public service announcement but nevertheless, the film spread the message that is desperately needed in a country like ours.

Bill Gates, meanwhile, in a series of tweets, shared many other stories from across the world that inspired him a lot. “1/ There’s no denying that 2017 was a really tough year… but it also delivered some amazing moments of hope and progress. Here are some inspiring tweets that you may have missed…,” he said in the first tweet and followed it with others.
