In an extraordinary display of zeal, police officers drove an SUV through the emergency ward of AIIMS Rishikesh to apprehend a nursing officer accused of sexually harassing a woman doctor. A viral video capturing the 26-second episode has left many in disbelief.

The video, which resembles a scene from an action movie, shows the police car navigating through a crowded emergency ward. Patients in beds lined both sides of the pathway as a group of security officials hastily cleared the way, moving stretchers and patients to make room for the vehicle. Inside the SUV, several police officers can be seen determinedly advancing through the hospital.

According to the police, the accused, Satish Kumar, allegedly harassed a woman doctor inside an operation theatre at the prestigious health facility. Rishikesh police officer Shankar Singh Bisht, speaking to news agency PTI, said that Kumar, now suspended, had also sent an obscene SMS to the doctor.

The police’s unusual approach has sparked debate on appropriate law enforcement methods, especially in sensitive environments like hospitals. While the need to apprehend an accused person is understood, a dramatic chase through an emergency ward full of vulnerable patients has drawn criticism for risking patient safety.

Earlier, resident doctors protested and demanded the termination of Satish Kumar, a day after his arrest, according to Medical Superintendent Sanjiv Kumar Mittal. Kumar was suspended and arrested on Tuesday.

The doctors gathered outside the Dean’s office, chanting slogans. They insisted that suspension was not enough for Kumar’s alleged offence and called for his immediate termination. They also demanded the suspension of Assistant Nursing Superintendent Sinoj, who had assigned Kumar to duty.

Kumar allegedly molested a doctor on the hospital premises on Sunday evening and sent her an obscene SMS, said Rishikesh Kotwali SHO Shankar Singh Bisht.

Despite the strike by senior and junior doctors since Tuesday, emergency services and 90 per cent of the hospital’s operating theatres remain operational. Mittal said a letter was sent to higher authorities requesting Kumar’s dismissal, and Sinoj was given 72 hours to explain his actions.
