The London-bound Air India flight 171 crashed just minutes after take-off in the Meghani Nagar area, a residential locality close to Ahmedabad airport. The aircraft departed at around 1:38 PM and started loosing altitude within five minutes. It was en route to London’s Gatwick airport, with Captain Sumit Sabharwal in command and Clive Kunder serving as co-pilot.
According to Air Traffic Control (ATC), the aircraft departed from Runway 23 and soon issued a distress “mayday” call. However, all further attempts by ATC to re-establish contact went unanswered. Moments later, the plane crashed just outside the airport boundary.
A total of 242 people were on board, including 230 adult passengers, 2 infants, and 12 crew members. Emergency response teams were swiftly sent to the crash site, where rescue operations are currently underway. Only one passenger survived the crash.
Dramatic visuals circulating online showed the aircraft’s tail jutting out from the building’s roof, while debris was strewn across the ground. According to reports, the plane hit the hostel canteen at a time when many residents were having lunch. The building, which accommodates nearly 200 students from BJ Medical College in Ahmedabad, suffered significant structural damage, with some rooms completely reduced to rubble.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi took stock of the situation. He expressed regret over the tragic situation, saying that it is “heartbreaking beyond words”. Home Minister Amit Shah is on ground zero.

We are on the highest alert,” he said. The minister added that he is closely monitoring the situation and has instructed all aviation and emergency response teams to act swiftly and in coordination.
The crash also resulted in the tragic loss of life of at least five medical students who were staying in a hostel near the crash site. Several others sustained serious injuries.
“After the takeoff, the plane crashed here and after a preliminary enquiry, we got to know that the … plane crashed into a building, which is a doctors’ hostel,” said the Joint Commissioner of Police in Ahmedabad during a media briefing.
