In a tragic incident, a 10-year-old girl in Patiala died of suspected food poisoning on March 25 allegedly after consuming her birthday cake. The victim, Manvi, a Class 5 student, celebrated her birthday on March 24, reported The Indian Express.
A video capturing the family’s birthday celebration has been circulating on social media following her tragic demise.
Police have filed an First Information Report (FIR) against the bakery, identified as ‘Kanha Bakery’ shop, that supplied the confection. However, even five days after her passing, no arrests have been made by the Patiala police.
According to her family, they ordered the cake via an online food delivery application and partook in the celebration around 7 pm. Following the festivities, Manvi went to sleep.
In the early hours of the morning, Manvi reportedly requested water before returning to sleep. Later, when her family checked on her, she was found unconscious. Rushed to a local hospital, doctors pronounced her dead upon arrival.
Allegations surfaced from Manvi’s family that five other members who consumed the cake also fell ill. Despite their efforts to seek clarification from the health department regarding the cause of Manvi’s death, they were purportedly turned away.
Health officials countered, stating that the precise cause of Manvi’s death would be established upon receipt of the viscera report.
Following a complaint lodged by Manvi’s mother, Kajal, local police registered a case against the ‘Kanha Bakery’ shop under sections 304-A (death due to negligence) and 273 (sale of food or drink, any article which has been rendered or has become noxious) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Patiala civil surgeon Dr. Raminder Kaur initiated an inquiry into the incident.
