Mumbai’s changing winter temperatures are putting people at risk of getting sick, warn doctors. The recent drop to 17.5 degrees Celsius is expected to stay above 20 degrees Celsius for a week, reaching 22 degrees Celsius on Monday. Dr. Wiqar Shaikh from JJ Hospital has shown his concern regarding public health, as respiratory wards are getting more patients despite less air pollution. Doctors say these temperature changes can weaken our body’s defenses.

Even with lower air pollution, Mumbai sees more people with breathing problems due to these temperature swings. Doctors explain that common cold symptoms last a week, but viral infections bring headaches, joint pain, dry cough, and a low-grade fever. Bacterial infections show yellowish or greenish sputum, high fever, and a sore throat.

Dr. Gauram Bhansali from Bombay Hospital explains that increased pollution affects the respiratory and cardiovascular systems, especially in children. The new concern is the JN.1, the Omicron variant of Covid-19. Experts fear Mumbai’s unpredictable weather could help this variant spread more.

Dr. Rahul Pandit from HN Reliance Hospital, a former member of the state Covid task force, says we need to be extra careful because the Omicron variant brings new challenges, and Mumbai’s weather isn’t helping. Being cautious and following preventive measures is crucial to avoid the variant’s impact on our healthcare system.

To help people understand the link between temperature changes and getting sick, public awareness campaigns are happening. As we face these challenges, staying informed and taking care of ourselves is important for our well-being. The combination of weather changes, pollution, and new variants makes it essential for everyone to do their part in staying healthy.
