The construction of the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, set to become India’s longest Greenfield Expressway, is expected to be completed by October 2025. This update was provided by Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday.
Substantial Construction Progress
The massive infrastructure project, which spans 1,386 kilometers and is divided into 53 packages, has seen substantial progress. As of June 2024, 26 of these packages have been completed, contributing to a physical progress rate of 82 percent. A cumulative length of 1,136 kilometers has been constructed so far.
Enhanced Connectivity and Reduced Travel Time
The Delhi-Mumbai Expressway is designed to enhance connectivity between major economic hubs in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and Maharashtra. According to the detailed project report (DPR), the new corridor will significantly reduce the distance between Delhi and the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) in Mumbai by approximately 180 kilometers. Additionally, travel time to various destinations along the route is expected to decrease by up to 50 percent.
In a separate update, Gadkari noted that as of June 30, 2024, there are 983 user fee plazas operational on National Highways across the country.
