At least eight people were injured on Sunday evening at Bardhaman railway station in West Bengal after a woman lost her balance on a foot overbridge and fell down the stairs, officials said.

Howrah Divisional Railway Manager Vishal Kapoor said the incident happened around 5:30 pm between platforms 4 and 5. Among the injured were five women and three men, all of whom were taken to Bardhaman Medical College for treatment.

What led to the stampede-like situation?

According to Kapoor, around 5:30 pm on Sunday, a woman lost her balance while coming down the stairs between platforms 4 and 5. As she fell, several others sitting on the foot overbridge stairs also lost their balance and tumbled down, leading to multiple injuries.

“Eight people got injured, five females and three males. They have been admitted to the hospital. Railways is extending all support to the injured,” he said.

Earlier, Indian Railways said in a statement that the Railway Protection Force and station staff quickly reached the spot and helped move the injured passengers to the hospital.

Authorities say there was no stampede

According to a statement by the Indian Railways, there was no stampede. “It is clarified that there was no stampede, and the crowd was normal. Furthermore, there were no casualties. The three injured have been taken to the hospital for treatment,” the statement said.
