India’s bullet train project, modeled on Japan’s Shinkansen network, will change the way we travel between Mumbai and Ahmedabad. NHSRCL has confirmed that the Mumbai–Ahmedabad corridor will have E5 series Shinkansen trains with operating speed of 320 kmph, covering 508 km in 2 hours 7 minutes on a limited stop service.

NHSRCL was incorporated in 2016 as a Special Purpose Vehicle with equity participation from Ministry of Railways, Government of Gujarat and Government of Maharashtra. It is responsible for executing, operating and maintaining India’s first high speed rail corridor.

Railway Minister’s Statement in Parliament

During the Monsoon session of Parliament, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said in Lok Sabha on August 20, 2025 that the project is designed for Japanese Shinkansen trains.

“Bullet train project is designed for Japanese Shinkansen trains,” he said.

He also said the project is very complex and involves advanced technology while replying to TMC MP Rachna Banerjee’s questions.

Mumbai–Ahmedabad Corridor and Expansion Plans

Twelve stations are planned at Mumbai, Thane, Virar, Boisar, Vapi, Billimora, Surat, Bharuch, Vadodara, Anand, Ahmedabad and Sabarmati.
