Jammu Tawi Railway Station is undergoing a comprehensive modernisation to enhance passenger experience, safety, and operational efficiency. Northern Railway, in a press statement on Saturday, revealed that the upgraded station will be better equipped to handle train operations for the Jammu & Kashmir valley.

The remodelled Jammu Tawi yard is slated for commissioning by March 6, 2025, according to Northern Railway. Yard remodelling work, a significant component of the modernisation project, is nearing completion, with non-interlocking work also set to finish soon.

“Yard remodelling is a challenging task, and its completion will accelerate the station redevelopment,” said Himanshu Shekhar Upadhyay, Chief Public Relations Officer, Northern Railway.

The modernisation project, valued at Rs 450 crore, aims to expand the number of platforms from three to seven. These platforms will feature state-of-the-art ballastless track technology for smoother operations and washable aprons to maintain hygiene.

The project includes the construction of two new 12-metre wide foot-over bridges for improved accessibility and a 72-metre wide air concourse connecting all seven platforms. Additionally, a new 4,500 sqm second-entry station building on the Narwal side is under development, along with the upgradation of the main station building to a 15,600 sqm facility equipped with modern amenities.

The yard remodelling also involves replacing outdated mechanical interlocking systems with advanced electronic interlocking to improve safety and operational efficiency.

Modernisation efforts will not only enhance train handling capacity but also ensure a cleaner and more passenger-friendly environment, Upadhyay added.
