Indian Railways is making strides toward a net-zero carbon emission future with over 2,000 railway stations using solar energy. In an update shared by the Ministry of Railways on Twitter, it was revealed that a total of 189.41 MW of solar rooftop capacity has already been commissioned, highlighting Indian Railways’ commitment to sustainable energy sources as a critical part of its green goals.
Advancing Electrification Targets
As part of these efforts to become the world’s largest “Green Railways,” Indian Railways is also advancing its electrification targets.
Few days back, The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) announced that it is leading the electrification of remaining un-electrified Broad-Gauge routes within its network. To date, NFR has successfully electrified 2,070.52 Route Kilometers (RKM), which constitutes around 64% of its total 4,260.52 RKMs.
In the northeastern states, Assam has achieved the most significant progress, with 1,353.23 RKMs now electrified, followed by 151.59 RKMs in Tripura, and additional sections in Manipur, Meghalaya, and Nagaland. These combined solar and electrification efforts reflect Indian Railways’ commitment to reducing its carbon footprint and advancing towards a sustainable future.
