The UAE government has announced major updates to its visa and residency system, introducing new categories to attract global talent and support tourism, technology, and entertainment sectors. The Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs, and Port Security (ICP) said the changes aim to improve quality of life, boost trade, and support economic growth while also addressing humanitarian needs.

The new regulations include four specialized visit visas, updates for widows and divorcees, revised rules for visiting relatives and friends, and changes to business and truck driver visas. Officials said the revisions were based on detailed studies and feedback from residents and international stakeholders.

Key Updates: Visit Visas

The UAE has introduced four new categories of visit visa:

  • AI Specialist Visa: Issued for single or multiple entries for a specific period, subject to a letter from a host or sponsoring technology company.
  • Entertainment Visa: Granted to foreigners visiting temporarily for leisure purposes.
  • Event Visa: For those attending festivals, exhibitions, conferences, seminars, or cultural, economic, sports, religious, or educational activities.
  • Cruise Tourism Visa: A multiple-entry visa for tourists arriving on cruise ships or leisure boats, subject to an approved travel itinerary and a licensed host company.

Expanded Residency and Business Options

The updated system also includes expanded residency options:

  • Humanitarian Residency Permit: Available for individuals from countries affected by war, disasters, or unrest, valid for one year with the possibility of extension.
  • Residency for Widows and Divorcees: Foreign widows or divorcees can obtain residency within six months of the death or divorce of their spouse, provided they meet specific conditions.
  • Visit Visa for Relatives and Friends: Residents can sponsor friends or relatives up to the third degree, with eligibility determined by the sponsor’s income level.

Business and labour visas have also been revised:

  • Business Exploration Visa: Requires proof of financial solvency, ownership of a stake in an overseas company, or documented professional practice.
  • Truck Drivers’ Visa: Allows foreign lorry drivers to obtain a visa for single or multiple trips, provided the sponsor is a licensed freight or transport company, with health insurance and financial guarantees required.
