An Indian IT professional has successfully secured an H1-B visa after an unexpected and major setback — the loss of his passport and critical documents just days before his scheduled US visa interview.

The applicant, who shared his journey on Reddit, is a 5-year experienced software engineer applying from India. After booking his visa slots at the US Consulate in Hyderabad, he went to make photocopies of important documents like his I-797 approval notice, academic records, and passport. However, in a twist of fate, his document folio was stolen — likely mistaken for a laptop sleeve.

Left with no passport, no I-797, and no academic documents, he acted swiftly. He filed a First Information Report (FIR) with the police, reapplied for a duplicate passport, and worked to get new copies of his degree certificates and transcripts. Fortunately, his immigration attorney assured him that a color printout of the I-797 approval notice would be acceptable, and it was.

Despite the anxiety, he showed up for his biometrics on May 19, and attended his visa interview on May 27 at 8:00 AM. The interview, conducted by a friendly visa officer at Counter 24, focused on routine questions — such as how long he’s worked with his employer, his highest qualification, and his role and responsibilities.

To his relief, the officer made no mention of the lost documents. After a quick scan of his fingerprints, she confirmed his H-1B visa was approved. He opted for premium delivery and soon received his stamped passport at home.

Sharing his experience, the techie encouraged others not to panic in difficult situations. “Brevity is the key,” he said, advising applicants to stay composed and well-prepared.
