Jindal Stainless Ltd (JSL) on Tuesday (May 14) announced that it has supplied high-end steel for the Indian Railways’ Vande Metro train project. The company provided approximately 50 tonnes of 21LN grade stainless steel for 12 train coaches.
JSL indicated its readiness to supply more material if the Railways opts to continue using this high-end grade for future Vande Metro trainsets or underframes. The supplied 21LN stainless steel grade is noted for its corrosion resistance, higher strength, and durability.
“Jindal Stainless has supplied about 50 tonnes of stainless steel of 21LN grade for 12 coaches of the project. We will supply more material if the Railways plans to continue with the high-end grade for the upcoming Vande Metro trainsets or for the underframes,” the company’s statement read.
Indian Railways’ Vande Metro train
The Indian Railways recently unveiled its first Vande Metro train, produced at the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai. The Vande Metro is designed for shorter distances compared to the Vande Bharat Express. This network will connect 124 cities within a distance of approximately 100-250 kilometers, facilitating both inter-city and intra-city travel.

Route: While Vande Metro focuses on connecting major cities within a short distance, primarily benefiting students and job seekers.
Frequency: Vande Metro trains will operate frequently, shuttling back and forth between cities four or five times a day.
Size: The trains can have a minimum of 12 coaches and up to 16. Vande Metro, as per multiple media reports, will have seats for 100 passengers and standing space for 180 passengers.
Speed: Vande Metro can reach a top speed of 130 kilometers per hour.
