The National Dam Safety Authority (NDSA) has taken action following the sinking of pillars at the Medigadda (Laxmi) barrage of the Kaleswaram project in Telangana. The Authority has established a six-member committee, in accordance with the Dam Safety Act 2021, to examine the causes behind the sinking of pillars.
The committee is tasked with engaging all stakeholders, including state government officials and the construction agency, to thoroughly investigate the incident. A detailed report, outlining the reasons for the pillar sinking, is expected soon.
Union Minister’s Request for Dam Safety Expertise
Union Tourism Minister G Kishan Reddy has written to the Union Jal Shakti Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, requesting the intervention of the Dam Safety Authority to conduct a comprehensive field investigation.
Reddy informed Shekhawat about the sinking of pillars in the 6th to 8th blocks of the Medigadda (Laxmi) barrage on October 21, noting that large sounds were heard from the barrage gates.
Concerns and Investigations
Reddy highlighted the release of 10 TMC of stored water into the sea due to the pillar sinking, causing a wastage of water resources that were intended for drinking and irrigation purposes.
The continuous failures of the Kaleswaram project, including the submergence of pump houses, have been raised as critical issues that need a thorough examination to ensure public safety.
L&T’s Response
Larsen & Toubro (L&T), the construction company behind the Medigadda (Laxmi) barrage, has dispatched a technical expert team to assess the sudden cause behind the damage.
