The Central Government has embarked on numerous infrastructure development projects to significantly enhance connectivity within India’s North Eastern Region (NER). These projects span across road, rail, air, and waterway sectors, aimed at improving accessibility and fostering regional growth.

Major projects

Road Connectivity: The government has made substantial strides in road connectivity through initiatives like the SARDP-NE and Bharatmala-I programs, alongside the East-West Corridor. As of May 2024, 78 km of National Highway roads have been constructed in the NE states. An expenditure of ₹2,859 crore was incurred by June 2024 to further develop these highways.

Air Connectivity: The region has seen a remarkable increase in air connectivity, with the number of airports rising to 17 by 2023, compared to just 9 in 2013. The UDAN scheme has facilitated 194 routes for fixed-wing and helicopter services, boosting tourism, business, and ease of travel.

Rail Connectivity: Rail infrastructure is also receiving a significant upgrade, with 18 projects covering 1,368 km under various stages of development. Of this, 313 km have been commissioned, with a total expenditure of ₹40,549 crore by March 2024.

Waterway Connectivity: The Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways has invested over ₹1,000 crore under the Sagarmala program to develop 20 operational waterways in the region. Key projects include the construction of ferry terminals in Assam to alleviate transportation bottlenecks.

These initiatives, supported by the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (MDoNER), underscore the government’s commitment to transforming the connectivity landscape of the North Eastern Region.
