Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate the long-awaited Howrah Maidan-Esplanade section of the Kolkata Metro next week, according to a government release issued on Sunday (March 10).

The release also stated that PM Modi will inaugurate the Kavi Subhash-Hemanta Mukhopadhyay and the Taratala-Majerhat metro sections during his visit.

Scheduled to tour Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Odisha, West Bengal, and Bihar from March 4-6, PM Modi’s focus will be on enhancing urban mobility avenues, the release noted.

Howrah Maidan-Esplanade section

The inauguration of the Howrah Maidan-Esplanade section marks a significant milestone in the East West Metro corridor, aiming to improve urban connectivity.

Additionally, PM Modi will launch the Kavi Subhash-Hemanta Mukhopadhyay metro section of the Kavi Subhash-Airport line and the Taratala-Majerhat section, a segment of the Joka-Esplanade line.

The Howrah Maidan-Esplanade metro section boasts India’s first transportation tunnel under a major river, the River Hooghly, linking Kolkata and Howrah cities on its east and west banks, respectively. Furthermore, the Howrah metro station is recognized as the deepest metro station in the country.
