Kolkata Metro’s East-West Corridor, also known as the Green Line, is inching closer to completion, marking a major milestone for the city’s public transportation network. General Manager P Uday Kumar Reddy conducted a trolley inspection on Tuesday of the Esplanade-Sealdah section, which has faced significant delays due to subsidence incidents in Bowbazar.
The East-West Corridor will eventually connect Howrah Maidan to Salt Lake Sector 5, spanning the city’s busy hubs. Currently, it operates in two disjointed sections—Howrah Maidan to Esplanade and Sealdah to Sector 5. Efforts to join these segments are progressing rapidly, with track-laying work in the Esplanade-Sealdah stretch now completed, according to a Kolkata Metro spokesperson.
During the inspection of the Howrah-bound tunnel, carried out ahead of the timeline set by the Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation Limited (KMRCL), Reddy acknowledged the efforts made by the implementing agency. He expressed optimism about the early commissioning of the entire corridor, which will significantly reduce travel time and ease congestion in the city.
The East-West Corridor has faced multiple setbacks, including the Bowbazar subsidence incidents, which required extensive mitigation efforts. Reddy had earlier visited the Bowbazar site on November 9 to assess the progress of the restoration work.
Once fully operational, the Green Line will provide seamless connectivity across Kolkata, linking crucial business, residential, and recreational hubs.
