Designed to revolutionise urban transportation in the country, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath conducted the on-site inspection of India’s first public transport ropeway viz ‘Kashi ropeway’ on Tuesday.

The chief minister along with several officials carried out the spot inspection of several projects including the Kashi ropeway and Varanasi’s Dr Sampurnanand Sports Stadium.

In March 2023, Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone of the passenger ropeway from Varanasi Cantt station to Godowlia.

Notably, the cost of the project is estimated to be around Rs. 645 crores. Further, the ropeway system will be 3.75 km in length with five stations from Cantt Railway Station (Varanasi Junction) to the Godaulia intersection.

Redefining public transport facilities

Uttar Pradesh’s Kashi ropeway system is aimed at redefining urban transport facilities in the region.

“When the project takes shape, pilgrims will be able to board the ropeway to reach Godaulia, Kashi Vishwanath Temple, and Dashashwamedh Ghat. Through this service, they would not have to face traffic on the roads,” Vice-president of Varanasi Development Authority (VDA) Abhishek Goyal mentioned to the media.

It is noteworthy that India would become the third country in the world after Bolivia and Mexico City to have a ropeway for public transport.

Besides, the ropeway cabin will have a European design, which will have an advanced ventilation system for commuters to travel comfortably. Furthermore, it will have a comfortable seating arrangement, enabling people with disabilities to use their wheelchairs inside the car cabin.

Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi pointed out that the new ropeway facility will take the connectivity in the city to a new level. He noted that it will boost the facilities of the city along with creating a new attraction for tourists.
