India is rapidly expanding its Metro train operations across the nation. Over the past decade, more than 700 km of new Metro lines have been made operational, bringing the total network length to 945 km, covering 21 cities. Prior to 2014, the Metro Rail system spanned just 248 km and operated in only 5 cities. Additionally, around 1018 km of new Metro lines are currently under construction.
Recently, the nation introduced its latest Metro system — Meerut Metro, the fastest in the country. In contrast, Delhi Metro boasts the longest network. Here’s a comparison between the two urban transit systems –
Meerut Metro vs Delhi Metro: Operator and beginning of operation
Meerut Metro will be operated by the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC), whereas Delhi Metro is operated by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC). Meerut Metro’s commercial operations will begin next year. Delhi Metro has been operational for over a decade, serving as the lifeline for Delhi-NCR residents.
Meerut Metro vs Delhi Metro: Length and stations
Meerut Metro covers a 23 km stretch with 13 stations from Meerut South Station to Modipuram, comprising 18 km of elevated and 5 km of underground sections. Meanwhile, Delhi Metro spans 393 km with 12 corridors and 288 stations. Soon, Delhi Metro’s network will exceed 400 km. The Delhi metro system consists of 10 color-coded lines, including the Red Line, which spans 33.48 km with 29 stations, and the Yellow Line, covering 47.25 km with 37 stations. The Blue Line is 55.56 km long with 50 stations, while the Green Line extends 27.96 km with 24 stations. The Violet Line runs for 45 km, offering 34 stations, and the Pink Line, the longest, measures 57.49 km with 38 stations.
Meerut Metro vs Delhi Metro: Speed comparison
Meerut Metro will operate at a speed of 120 kmph, with a maximum operational speed of 135 kmph. In comparison, Delhi Metro trains run at a maximum speed of 80 kmph, except for the Airport Express Line (AEL), which reaches 120 kmph. The average speed on regular lines is around 40 kmph (excluding AEL).

Meerut Metro will feature three-car trainsets, whereas Delhi Metro has a variety of coach configurations, including eight-car and six-car trains.

Both Meerut Metro and Delhi Metro share similar features, such as CCTV cameras, dedicated seats for ladies, senior citizens, and persons with disabilities, emergency talk-back systems, charging ports for mobile and laptops, and dynamic route maps.
However, Delhi Metro stands out with its driverless trains on the Magenta Line, a feature not present in Meerut Metro. DMRC is also acquiring more driverless trains from Alstom.
