Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to inaugurate a 13km segment of the Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) between New Ashok Nagar in Delhi and Sahibabad in Ghaziabad on Sunday (December 29), officials aware of the matter told Financial Express.
However, the inauguration may be delayed by a few days due to the recent passing of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, with sources suggesting it could be postponed by around a week.
Once this 13km stretch becomes operational, the transit system will connect Delhi to Meerut in the NCR. Currently, the 42km functional portion of the RRTS is entirely located in Uttar Pradesh, noted officials from the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC), the agency overseeing the project.
The new section will feature Delhi’s first underground RRTS station at Anand Vihar and an elevated station at New Ashok Nagar. However, the full 82km RRTS corridor, extending from Jangpura in Delhi to Modipuram in Meerut, is expected to be completed by mid-2025.
Final trial runs underway on Delhi section of RRTS
Namo Bharat trains are currently conducting final trial runs on the Sahibabad-to-Delhi segment, covering key stations at Anand Vihar and New Ashok Nagar. Notably, Anand Vihar will feature the first underground station on the RRTS corridor. Once operational, the corridor will extend to 55 km, enabling Namo Bharat services between Sahibabad and New Ashok Nagar.
To enhance commuter convenience, NCRTC has introduced a loyalty points program, offering a 10% discount on fares for passengers purchasing QR code-based tickets through the RRTS Connect app.
