In a major development to mobility in Pune, the Union Cabinet has approved the Phase-2 project of the Pune Metro Rail. The new phase will comprise two elevated stretches, one from Vanaz to Chandani Chowk and Ramwadi to Wagholi. It will extend the current Vanaz-Ramwadi line under Phase-1.
The corridors will cover a stretch of 12.75 km and will add 13 more stations. It will also be connecting expanding areas like Chandni Chowk, Kothrud, Bavdhan, Kharadi, and Wagholi. The government plans to complete the project in four years.

The project will be built for Rs 3,626.24 crore, and the Central government, the Maharashtra government, and international agencies will equally share the funding. “These two elevated corridors will span 12.75 km and include 13 stations, connecting fast-developing suburbs such as Chandni Chowk, Kothrud, Bavdhan, Kharadi, and Wagholi. The project is scheduled for completion within four years,” stated Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, as quoted by PTI.
The proposed corridors are part of a larger Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP), directed at boosting East-West connectivity in Pune. “This strategic proposal is a logical extension of the existing Corridor-2 and aligns with the Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP),” Vaisnaw added.
For providing smoother transitions between routes, the corridors will interlink other major metro lines like Line-1 (Nigdi-Katraj) and Line-3 (Hinjewadi-District Court) at the District Court Interchange.
Phase 2 extension will connect IT hubs, schools and metro lines
To increase public transport usage, the extensions will offer services for IT hubs, residential areas, schools, and commercial zones. They will also integrate with bus routes from Mumbai, Chattrapati Sambhaji Nagar, Bengaluru, and Ahilya Nagar.
Vaishnaw stated that, “These routes will also help decongest arterial routes like Paud Road and Nagar Road, offering safe, fast and eco-friendly mobility options.”
The ridership for Line-2 is projected to increase from 0.96 lakh daily in 2027 to 3.49 lakh by 2057. Maha-Metro will be managing the implementation. The survey and design planning of the projects are already underway.
