Good news for the people of Bengaluru! Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday formally dedicated the two stretches of the Namma Metro’s Purple Line to the nation. Both these metro sections – Baiyappanahalli to Krishnarajapuram and Kengeri to Challaghatta have been opened for public service from October 09, 2023 to provide convenience to the public commuting on this corridor.

BMRCL’s operational network touches 73.81 km

With the opening of these two vital sections, the operational network of Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has increased from 69.66 km to 73.81 km with 66 metro stations. The operational headway on East-West Corridor will be from Whitefield (Kadugodi) to Patandur Agrahara (10 minutes), Patandur Agrahara to Mysore Road (5 minutes), Nadaprabhu Kempegowda Station – Majestic to MG Road (3 minutes) during morning peak hours, Mysore Road to Challaghatta (10 minutes).

Train timings on Namma Metro’s East-West Corridor

The metro rail services on both the sections starts at 05:00 hrs and the last train from Whitefield (Kadugodi) would depart at 22.45 hrs and from the rest of the terminal stations at 23:05 hrs. 

Expected Footfall over Namma Metro’s Purple Line

On weekdays, the Namma Metro witnessed a count of around 6.50 lakh passengers from KR Puram to Byappanahalli and Kengeri to Challaghatta. However, after the opening of these two stretches, it is expected that around 7.50 lakh passengers may travel per day.

CMRS approval

The BMRCL received the approval of the Commissioner for Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) for the two new connectivity of the Purple Line last month. 

Significance:-

The beginning of metro services on the two sections of the purple line has brought much relief to Bengalureans as they can finally avail Metro services on this line. The extension of metro rail services from Byappanahalli to KR Puram is crucial as it offers an uninterrupted transport facility to Whitefield which has become a major IT-BT hub.
