Bengaluru Metro Penalties: In a major crackdown on fare evasion, the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) has collected more than Rs 19 lakh in fines from 10,069 passengers over the past three months. The fines were levied for travelling without tickets and occupying seats that were reserved for women. BMTC officials reported that intensive checks were conducted across buses in Bengaluru, with staff inspecting 57,219 trips in August, September, and October. As a result, Rs 17.96 lakh was collected from 8,891 passengers for ticketless travel, while an additional Rs 1.17 lakh was gathered from 1,178 male passengers occupying women’s seats.
Bengaluru Metro ticket fare revision
Over a month back, the BMRCL had announced that it was going to seek public input on revising metro ticket fares. The Fare Fixation Committee issued a notification inviting suggestions from passengers regarding the fare changes. The notice encouraged the public to share their feedback via email at ffc@bmrc.co.in or by post addressed to the Chairperson, Fare Fixation Committee, BMRCL, Shantinagar. Passengers were asked to submit their suggestions by the deadline of October 21, 2024.
The BMRCL is a joint venture between the Government of India and the Karnataka government, currently operates a metro network spanning 73.81 km under Phase 1. Significant construction activities are ongoing to extend the network further. With the development of Phases 2, 2A, and 2B, the metro system in Bengaluru is set to expand dramatically, reaching a total length of 175 km.
Bengaluru Metro: Cabinet approves 2 key corridors of Phase 3 metro
In a major development, the Union Cabinet has recently approved two key corridors of the Phase 3 metro project. Corridor 1 will connect JP Nagar’s 4th phase to Kempapura along the Outer Ring Road West, covering a distance of 32.15 km and featuring 21 stations. Corridor 2 will run from Hosahalli to Kadabagere along Magadi Road, with a length of 12.50 km and nine stations.
Once Phase 3 is completed, the total length of Bengaluru’s metro network will stretch to approximately 220 km. This expansion is part of the city’s efforts to improve public transport, reduce traffic congestion, and provide a more efficient and eco-friendly transportation option for residents. The growth of the metro network is expected to bring significant benefits in terms of accessibility and connectivity across the city.
