Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the highly anticipated Phase 2 extension of the Ahmedabad Metro Rail on Monday (September 16) during his visit to Gujarat. This marks the PM’s first visit to his home state since beginning his third term in office on June 9.

The launch of Phase 2 is expected to significantly enhance the metro network’s reach, providing improved access for professionals, students, and tourists traveling between the state’s key urban and educational hubs. The services will be available to the people from September 17 onwards.

Ahmedabad Metro Phase 2: Top points

  1. The first part of Phase 2 covers 21 kilometers and introduces eight new metro stations. This phase is designed to provide seamless and efficient transportation across both residential and commercial zones.
  2. Phase 2 integrates with the ongoing Part 2 of Phase 1, which will eventually connect Sector 1 in Gandhinagar to Mahatma Mandir, which is a significant convention and exhibition center.
  3. The project is developed by the Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC) in collaboration with the state and central governments.
  4. The project will link major locations such as Gujarat National Law University (GNLU), Pandit Deendayal Energy University (PDEU), GIFT City, Raysan, Randesan, Dholakuva, Infocity, and Sector-1.
  5. The total cost of the Phase 2 extension stands at Rs 5,384 crore. Funding has been secured through loans from international financial institutions, including AFD (France) and KfW (Germany).
  6. The new extension dramatically shortens travel time between Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar, which are approximately 25 kilometers apart. 
  7. Commuters can travel from APMC to GIFT City in under an hour for a fare of around Rs 35.
  8. Additionally, the new service is anticipated to ease traffic congestion on Ahmedabad’s crowded roads, lower pollution levels, and alleviate the strain on the city’s existing infrastructure.
  9. Services from Sector-1 Metro Station to Motera Stadium Metro Station will operate from 7:20 am to 6:40 pm. Trains running between GNLU Metro Station and GIFT City Metro Station will be available from 8:20 am to 6:25 pm. Conversely, services from GIFT City Metro Station to GNLU Metro Station will run from 7:18 am to 6:38 pm.
