The Indian government is preparing to take legal action against major e-commerce platforms, including Amazon, Flipkart, Myntra, Meesho, and Bigbasket, for allegedly selling products that lack mandatory certification from the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), sources have revealed to NDTV.

The crackdown follows a series of raids conducted by BIS in March 2025, during which officials inspected multiple warehouses operated by Flipkart and Amazon. According to sources, the raids uncovered more than 11,000 non-compliant items, ranging from kitchen appliances and toys to electrical equipment — all of which lacked the BIS mark.

Under the BIS Act, 2016, selling products without the required certification is a punishable offence. The law allows for penalties of up to 10 times the value of the non-certified goods sold and imprisonment for up to two years.

The BIS is now in the process of filing cases against the e-commerce firms in a magistrate court. Sources indicated that this move is part of a broader effort to enforce consumer protection and product quality standards across online marketplaces.

Earlier in March, the BIS had initiated legal proceedings against Techvision International Pvt Ltd, a supplier found violating certification norms, marking the first in a series of expected actions.

Authorities have reiterated that online marketplaces cannot absolve themselves of responsibility when it comes to the sale of uncertified products, especially those that may pose safety risks to consumers. The government aims to tighten oversight and ensure compliance across the booming e-commerce sector
