The Society for Emergency Medicine, India (SEMI) — Delhi Chapter recently hosted a conference highlighting the various aspects of emergency medicine and how the status can be improved by including innovative practices and championing environmental sustainability.

The main highlight of the conference “Best Practices in Emergency Medicine v2.0” held on August 16-17, 2024 in Crown Plaza, Gurgaon was “Woman only” faculties, panelists, and EMCEE.

In August last year, the society conducted the India’s first certified (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change) Carbon neutral Healthcare conference – Best Practises in EM v1.0.

Dr. Kousar Ali Shah, Executive Vice President and Zonal Head of Max Super Speciality Hospital, Patparganj was the chief guest of the conference. During the conference, eminent industry leaders discussed the pivotal role of women in the field of not just emergency medicine, but healthcare as a whole.

Various pertinent aspects of emergency physicians and their role as innovators, leaders, administrators and healers were discussed during the conference. The experts also discussed the perspective of administrators on emergency medicine and also highlighted the role of women in the field.

The discussions at the conference ranged from AI in emergency medicine to crisis communication skills, challenges in paediatric emergencies to ethical issues and lots more.

Dr. Sanjay Jaiswal, VP- National Board SEMI, Director and HOD at Max Super Speciality Hospital, Patparganj, and organizing chair initiated the conference by celebrating its status as a pioneer in green conferences focused on emergency medicine.

Meanwhile, Dr. Ankur Verma, President SEMI – Delhi and organizing co-chair strongly condemned the heinous act of the rape and murder of a doctor which recently occurred in Kolkata. Ironically, the conference celebrating women doctors coincided with the nationwide protests against the incident.

The conference was also marked by the presence of Dr Ffion Davies, Immediate Past President, International Federation for Emergency Medicine. She delved into the importance of diversity and strong leadership within healthcare organisations. Her session highlighted that diversity extends beyond mere representation; it encompasses having a voice within the organisation, which is crucial for fostering inclusive and effective healthcare environments.

The conference witnessed wide participation of medical and healthcare professionals across India, including regions like Manipur, Rajasthan, West Bengal, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh,UP, Haryana, Kerala, Punjab, Gujarat, Bihar, and Karnataka.

“This diverse attendance not only enriched the discussions but also underscored the nationwide interest in advancing emergency medical practices. Multiple Hands-on workshops were held across Delhi-NCR as part of the conference. The conference not only had doctors as delegates but included emergency nurses, paramedics, medical students, and interns in attendance,” the society said in a statement.

The integration of sustainability and innovation at the SEMI conference sets a new standard for future medical conferences, aiming not only to discuss best practices but also to implement them in ways that respect both environmental and clinical imperatives, it added.
