Kerala Health Minister Veena George announced on Tuesday that 16 individuals, who had been in close contact with a 24-year-old man who died of Nipah virus last week, tested negative for the disease. The man, a native of Malappuram district, succumbed to the virus on September 9, prompting the state to initiate rigorous containment efforts.

Out of the 225 people who had come into contact with the deceased, 50 individuals were categorized as high-risk. Samples from 16 of these high-risk individuals, tested at the Manjeri Government Medical College, confirmed no signs of infection, George revealed during a press briefing. “As of now, there is no room for concern,” she assured, while emphasizing that containment measures remain stringent.

The health department continues to monitor the situation closely, with samples being collected from all high-risk individuals and anyone showing symptoms. “We are taking all necessary steps to identify and treat those exposed,” George said, adding that samples from more individuals will be collected and tested in the coming days. Despite the negative test results, the minister cautioned that any symptomatic cases will still undergo testing as a precautionary measure.

The Kerala government has also coordinated with health authorities in Karnataka, where the deceased man had been studying, to trace and monitor his classmates and friends who had been in contact with him. Additionally, the state remains in constant communication with the central government to ensure effective containment of the virus.

Five wards in two panchayats in Malappuram district have been declared containment zones. Authorities have enforced restrictions in these areas, including the closure of schools, cinemas, and businesses by 7 PM, and banned large gatherings. Residents have been asked to wear masks in public spaces to limit potential transmission. Partial restrictions have also been imposed across other parts of Malappuram.
