On Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi underscored the crucial role of the space sector in India’s growth trajectory, highlighting its importance in the nation’s journey toward becoming a “Developed India-2047.” Addressing the nation from the historic Red Fort on Independence Day, he reiterated his government’s commitment to reforming and strengthening the space sector as a key element in fortifying the country’s position on the global stage.
In his speech, PM Modi underlined that the reforms in the space sector are not merely for accolades but are aimed at empowering the nation. He pointed out the surge of startups entering the space domain, reflecting the vibrancy and potential of this sector. “The space sector is an important aspect. We have done many reforms in this sector. Today, many startups are entering this sector. The space sector, which is becoming vibrant, is an essential element towards making India a powerful nation. We are focusing and giving strength to this sector with a long-term idea,” Modi remarked.
He also highlighted the tangible outcomes of the government’s policy decisions, noting the increased participation of private entities in the space sector. “When the policy is right, the intention is right, and the mantra is national welfare with complete dedication, then we definitely achieve results. Today, private satellites and private rockets are being launched. The space sector is the future for India,” he stated.
Looking ahead, India’s space ambitions include the highly anticipated Gaganyaan mission, slated for launch in 2024-25. This mission will mark India’s first human spaceflight, sending a crew of three astronauts into an orbit of 400 km for a three-day mission. The project is a testament to India’s growing capabilities in space exploration, aiming to safely return the crew to Earth, landing in Indian waters.
PM Modi also reflected on India’s recent space achievements, including the successful Chandrayaan-3 mission, which achieved a historic soft landing on the South Pole of the Moon, and the Aditya-L1 mission, India’s first solar exploration endeavor. These milestones are just the beginning of a series of ambitious projects, including the establishment of a ‘Bharatiya Antariksha Station’ by 2035 and sending the first Indian to the Moon by 2040.
The Prime Minister’s address, marking his 11th consecutive Independence Day speech, resonated with the theme ‘Viksit Bharat @ 2047,’ encapsulating the government’s vision of transforming India into a developed nation by the centenary of its independence.
Reacting to PM Modi’s speech, Lt Gen AK Bhatt (retd.), Director General of the Indian Space Association (ISpA), lauded the government’s proactive stance on the space sector. “The Indian space sector has undergone significant transformation in recent years, marked by key path-breaking reforms such as privatization, the introduction of a comprehensive space policy, liberal FDI regulations, and others. These changes have laid a strong foundation for India to consolidate its position in the global space economy,” Bhatt said.
He added that with the government’s visionary support, the private space sector is poised for exponential growth in the coming decade, driving innovation, attracting global investments, and positioning India at the forefront of space technology and exploration.
As India looks to the stars, the convergence of government initiatives, private sector dynamism, and ambitious future missions set the stage for the country to become a major player in the global space arena.
