UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy has arrived in New Delhi on his first official visit since assuming office. This visit aims to fortify the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the UK and India, enhancing the “living bridge” between the two nations.
Lammy’s agenda focuses on economic, domestic, and global security. He will engage in high-level meetings with Indian government officials and leaders from climate and business sectors to unlock the full potential of the UK-India partnership.
According to an official statement issued by the British High Commission, New Delhi, a key highlight of Lammy’s visit is the push for a reset in the UK-India relationship. He aims to reinforce the UK’s commitment to securing a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) that benefits both economies. He will convey to his Indian counterpart the importance of driving greater growth for both countries.
Ahead of his visit this is what Lammy said:
“India is the emerging superpower of the 21st century, with 1.4 billion people and one of the fastest growing economies in the world,” Lammy said. “Our FTA negotiations are just the beginning of our ambitions to unlock our shared potential and deliver growth, from Bengaluru to Birmingham.”
He emphasized shared interests in green transition, new technologies, economic security, and global security. And underscored the importance of resetting the UK’s relationship with the Global South to reconnect Britain for security and prosperity.
The Foreign Secretary plans to galvanize support for accelerated climate action, viewing India as an indispensable partner. He aims to drive forward the clean energy transition and create opportunities for British and Indian businesses. Discussions will include partnering on Indian-led global initiatives to build clean power access and climate resilience.
Living Bridge
Lammy will highlight the significance of the “Living Bridge” between the UK and India, representing the 1.7 million people of Indian heritage in the UK who contribute significantly to British life. He will visit India’s third-largest technology company, meeting business leaders to promote shared ambitions in cutting-edge science, innovation, trade, and improved livelihoods.
High-level talks with Indian government officials, including External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, will reiterate the extraordinary contribution of British Indians and the potential of the UK-India partnership. Lammy’s visit aims to deliver prosperity for both nations and the global community.
Following his visit to India, Lammy will attend the ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ meeting in Laos to advance UK economic partnerships and unveil new cooperation on climate and health.
