Larsen & Toubro’s Precision Engineering Systems business vertical has clinched an important contract to construct part of Two Fleet Support Ships (FSS) for Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL), designated for the Indian Navy. These specialized vessels, each exceeding 220 meters in length and boasting a displacement of approximately 45,000 tons, will play critical roles in providing logistics and material support to naval task forces at sea.
Following the Indian Navy’s contract with HSL for the design and construction of five FSS in August 2023, these vessels mark a landmark achievement in India’s maritime capabilities under the “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” initiative.
According to an official statement issued by the company, the collaborative effort between Larsen & Toubro and Hindustan Shipyard Limited aims to meet stringent delivery timelines, reinforcing India’s commitment to bolstering its naval fleet through domestic shipbuilding.
The company’s track record in defence shipbuilding underscores its prowess in ‘Make in India’ initiatives. Since securing its first defence shipbuilding order in March 2010, L&T has successfully designed, constructed, and delivered over 70 defence vessels, many of which were completed ahead of schedule. The construction of these Fleet Support Ships will take place at L&T’s state-of-the-art shipyard in Kattupalli, near Chennai, renowned for its cutting-edge technology and adherence to global standards in maritime engineering.
This strategic endeavour not only enhances India’s maritime capabilities but also drives economic growth and technological advancement in the country’s shipbuilding sector, aligning with national objectives of self-reliance and indigenous defence production.
