Widespread dense fog enveloped the national capital, Uttar Pradesh, Chandigarh, Rajasthan, and Bihar, with Madhya Pradesh and Tripura also experiencing substantial fog cover. On Thursday, the India Meteorological Department reported moderate fog in the Jammu division, contributing to the prevailing cold wave conditions in North India.
Due to the foggy conditions, flight operations faced delays at Delhi airport due to low visibility.
Dense fog covers north India
According to IMD, very dense fog affected Uttar Pradesh, Chandigarh, Rajasthan, Bihar, while Madhya Pradesh and Tripura experienced dense fog. Moderate fog conditions were observed in the Jammu division on Thursday, contributing to the cold wave conditions in the region.
Low visibility in Delhi
Delhi’s Safdarjung recorded a visibility level of 500 meters, Palam at 700 meters. In Rajasthan, visibility levels were reported at Bikaner-25 meters, Jaisalmer-50 meters, Kota-50 meters, and Jaipur-50 meters. Bihar experienced Gaya with 25 meters, Purnea with 25 meters, and Patna with 200 meters visibility.
Cold wave conditions
The prevailing cold wave conditions have prompted administrative measures in Noida and Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh, where schools for students up to Class 8 have been ordered to remain closed until January 6 due to severe cold weather.
The weather department anticipates no significant change in minimum temperatures over the next two days in East India, followed by a subsequent rise of 2-3 degrees Celsius. Meanwhile, Central India is expected to experience a gradual rise in minimum temperatures by 2-3 degrees Celsius over the next three days, with no significant change thereafter.
