Air India has issued a statement addressing the diversion of flight AI126 from Chicago to Delhi on March 5, 2025, which had to return to Chicago O’Hare International Airport due to malfunctioning lavatories.

The airline confirmed that, as part of their investigation into the incident, they discovered that the lavatory issues were caused by polythene bags, rags, and clothing that had been flushed down and became lodged in the plumbing. This resulted in multiple lavatories becoming unserviceable during the flight.

“We fully empathize with the passengers who faced discomfort and disruption to their travel plans due to the flight’s diversion,” said an Air India spokesperson. “However, we would like to clarify the sequence of events surrounding the flight.”

The flight, which had initially departed on time at 1648 UTC, was about an hour and forty-five minutes into its journey when the crew reported that some of the lavatories in both Business and Economy classes had become unserviceable. Over the course of the flight, eight out of the 12 lavatories malfunctioned, severely limiting the available facilities for all the passengers on board.

At this point, the aircraft was flying over the Atlantic, with potential diversion points in Europe. However, due to night operation restrictions at most European airports, the decision was made to return to Chicago for passenger comfort and safety.

Upon landing at Chicago O’Hare International Airport, all passengers were provided with immediate assistance, including hotel accommodations and alternative flight options to continue their journey to Delhi.

The airline also addressed similar issues on past flights, stating that objects such as blankets, innerwear, and diapers had been improperly flushed down toilets, causing blockages. Air India took the opportunity to remind passengers to use lavatories solely for their intended purpose.

According to aviation regulations, even one or two clogged toilets can warrant an unscheduled landing due to limited onboard facilities.
