The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has started testing of the Instrument Landing System (ILS) signals at the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport, a PTI report stated on Wednesday (July 17).

The airport, which is slated to begin its first phase of operations by March 2025, has begun these tests from Tuesday and is scheduled to continue them until Saturday.

AAI evaluates ILS operational aspects

The AAI aims to assess various operational aspects of the ILS on the runway during this period. ILS functions as a precision runway approach aid utilising dual radio beams to provide pilots with both vertical and horizontal guidance during landing approaches.

According to sources, the localiser component ensures lateral alignment with the runway centerline, while the glide path component offers vertical altitude guidance.

Approximately 20 tests are conducted before ILS implementation to ensure operational readiness, focusing on signal accuracy and guidance precision for safe aircraft operations.

Calibration testing concluded

According to an airport official, calibration testing at Navi Mumbai International Airport has been completed successfully.

The airport project, developed by the Adani Group, is structured in five phases and will accommodate a total of 90 million passengers annually. The initial phase is expected to handle 20 million passengers per annum.
