Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently laid the foundation stone for a significant infrastructure project in Bihar – the development of a Rs 912-crore civil enclave at Darbhanga Airport. This initiative is expected to significantly enhance air connectivity for the Mithila region and northern Bihar. Here’s what you need to know about the project and its potential impact.

What is the Project?

The civil enclave at Darbhanga Airport will be developed with a budget of Rs 912 crore, and the project aims to increase the airport’s capacity to handle more passengers and flights. The new infrastructure will play a crucial role in supporting air travel demands in the region. Once completed, it is expected to not only enhance the airport’s facilities but also improve the overall air connectivity for Bihar’s northern districts.

Why is it Important for Northern Bihar?

Darbhanga Airport is a key gateway for the Mithila region and north Bihar. Currently, around 1,500 passengers travel through the airport daily, facilitated by 10 flights. With the development of the new civil enclave, this number is expected to increase to 50 flights per day. This will significantly ease travel for residents of northern Bihar, reduce travel times, and promote regional development.

Government’s Role in the Project

The Bihar state government has already provided its support by transferring 76.65 acres of land to the Airports Authority of India (AAI) for the development of the civil enclave. This demonstrates a strong collaboration between the state and central governments, with Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar expressing gratitude to Prime Minister Modi for initiating the project.

The CM also emphasized that the project will benefit several districts in the Mithila region and northern Bihar, boosting development and economic growth. He reaffirmed that the state government will continue to extend necessary support to the central government to ensure the project’s successful completion.

Future Expectations

Once operational, the civil enclave will substantially increase the airport’s peak-hour passenger capacity, which is expected to foster more tourism, business, and employment opportunities in the region. With an aim to expand the airport’s flight operations from 10 to 50 flights per day, the project represents a significant step towards modernizing air travel infrastructure in Bihar.
