Tamil Nadu, which occupies the second position in egg production in the country, plans to develop poultry clusters in parts of the state where its farming has not been taken up conventionally. To set up these clusters, the government is looking at about seven backward regions and areas where poultry farming hasn?t started in order to take egg production beyond Namakkal, popularly known as the egg-exporting hub of the country.

In Tamil Nadu, poultry farming has evolved on a commercial scale in the Western part of the state, with Namakkal developing as a layer belt and the Palladam region becoming a hub for broilers. The development has been so far restricted to the Western belt of the state, though there was good potential in other parts of the state.
