Dravida Munnettra Kazhagam (DMK) supremo M Karunanidhi?s daughter Kanimozhi suffered a major setback on Monday when the Supreme Court rejected her and Kalaignar TV managing director Sharad Kumar?s bail pleas. The duo had moved the apex court after their bail petitions were rejected by a trial court of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Delhi High Court.

The development is sure to dash hopes of other 12 2G spectrum accused lodged in Tihar Jail whose bail pleas have been rejected by the trial court and the Delhi High Court. So far, Kanimozhi and Kumar were the only accused to have approached the Supreme Court for bail. They will continue to be under judicial custody until charges are framed against them. A special bench of justices GS Singhvi and BS Chauhan asked them to wait till framing of charges before approaching the special CBI court for bail.

During the arguments, the CBI opposed the bail pleas, saying the original documents regarding the illegal financial transaction of R200 crore with Kalaignar TV were yet to be recovered and the accused might tamper with the evidence if released on bail.
