Even as several sectors in the township are plunged into darkness during night hours, courtesy non-functional streetlights, the Municipal Corporation and the Administration continue to look the other way.

Among the worst affected are Sectors 5, 6, 7, 10, 11, 12, 16, 19, 21, 25 and 26. The situation on main roads like Sector 5-9, 16, 17 is no better. In Industrial Area, electricity poles stand damaged. Several main roads in Panchkula have poles erected by the MC, but the lights are yet to be installed. There are about 10,000 streetlights across the township, of which a majority remain defunct.

?Any untoward incident can happen in such a situation. The Administration must do something,? said Shivani Sekhri, a resident of Sector 10.

Civic body officials, meanwhile, said they have already handed over the contract for maintenance of streetlights to private contractors. ?We have identified the areas that are worst hit. Work on the lights has already started,? said O P Sihag, executive officer, MC.
