The Supreme Court on Friday asked the Centre to show the representations on the basis of which French cement giant Lafarge had managed to get loan from the Asian Development Bank and other financial institutions.
A special forest Bench headed by Chief Justice SH Kapadia posed the question to attorney general GE Vahanvati, who is also appearing for the company to get the court’s permission to run the mines in the ecologically sensitive area. The court also asked the government to show whether the ministry of environment and forests while granting approval for mining was aware that the disputed mining area was a forest land. Besides, the AG also will have to explain whether permission could have been granted for diversion of such forest land, if any.
