The special CBI court, Bhubaneswar, on Wednesday remanded the kingpin of multi-crore Rourkela Steel Plant modernisation scam, KP Singh, to judicial custody. The CBI arrested Singh, absconding since 2004, from Goa on August 25. He was brought to Bhubaneswar on Tuesday.
Singh and 30 others are facing prosecution for embezzlement of the Rs 5000-crore RSP modernisation fund between 1990 and 1994. The CBI during investigation found that contractors and suppliers engaged in modernisation work had defrauded the plant of Rs 200 crore by submitting false bills.
Singh, the then deputy general manager of the plant, and 30 other executives helped these contractors and suppliers swindle the government money.
