The Cabinet Committee of Economic Affairs (CCEA) approved the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems (CCTNS) Project on Friday with an outlay of Rs 2,000 crore in the 11th Five Year Plan. The CCTNS programme is part of the National e-governance programme (NeGP) of the Ministry of Communications and IT and is one of the 27 Mission Mode Projects under NeGP.

The project, which aims to create a comprehensive and integrated system for enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of the policing at the Police Station level, would be initiated by the ministry of home affairs and implemented by the National Crime Records Bureau. While the major role in the implementation would lie with the State government, only certain core components would be in the hands of the Central Government.

The broad objectives of the project are streamlining investigation and prosecution processes, strengthening of intelligence gathering machinery, improved public delivery system and citizen-friendly interface, nationwide sharing of information across on crime and criminals and improving efficiency of police functioning.
