Another road crumbed in the city on Saturday, this time near the Yamuna Sports Complex, taking the total number of cave-ins in Delhi this month to over 20. To make matters worse, a truck got stuck in the pit formed on the road.
Yet again, the road caved in due to leakages in the sewer pipes underneath caused by trenchless cable installation through which electrical and telephone lines are laid without digging up the road. Reports said BSES had laid lines here a few months back.
Talking to Newsline, a senior PWD engineer said: ?Earlier, BSES had installed some lines there. We are not absolutely sure, but preliminary reports suggest there must have been a seepage from the sewage line below. The small hole has now been filled up,? he said. This week, several roads, including Asoka Road and Rajesh Pilot Marg, caved in due to damage caused by the trenchless technology.
Meanwhile, a 10-year-old boy was injured when a portion of an old house fell on him in Northeast Delhi?s Gokulpuri on Saturday morning. Azimuddin was passing by a house in Mustafabad area when the portion of a roof fell on the him, injuring him on the head and arm, said a police officer. The house belongs to one Rahees Pehalwan who lives in Noida and has been rented out. Officials said they would ask the MCD to declare the old house dangerous for living.
