After a bold decision on foreign direct investment (FDI) in multi-brand retail, the government on Friday came under attack in Parliament from ally Trinamool Congress and the Opposition, but asserted that the opening up of the sector would create over 10 million jobs in three years and also contain inflation.
?More than 4 million jobs will be created and in the logistics, anywhere between 5-6 million jobs over a period of three years,? said commerce and industry minister Anand Sharma at a press conference after informing Parliament about the decision taken by the Cabinet.
He was allaying concerns that opening up of the likes of Walmart would lead to large-scale unemployment.
