The export of apparels in some segments may be facing some adversity due to a weak dollar but production targets should be met by the industry, and export targets for readymade garments will be realised in the current financial year, notwithstanding the appreciation of the rupee, Shankersinh Vaghela, Union textile minister said.
At the 2nd Asian Apparel Conference organised by Asian Apparel Federation (AAF) and hosted by The Clothing Manufacturers Association of India (CMAI) here on Thursday, Vaghela said, ?The textile & clothing industry is a major growth engine for the nation?s economy and contributes significantly to the country?s export basket.?He emphasized the need for the domestic apparel industry to strengthen its production values, quality & competitiveness to remain buoyant in this very dynamic market.
He also stressed that apparel manufacturers should instill the effect of quality consciousness not only in the high value products but also in all the products across the price spectrum, so as to be able to stand up to the highest standards in the global market.
Du Yuzhou, president, Asian Apparel Federation said, ?Asia is having population of 3.7 billion & per capita income is $800. There is 10% spend on clothing. Hence, we must share our experience in high value products and have different approach for co-operation.?
Rahul Mehta, president of CMAI & vice president of AAF stated that Asian countries manufactured 52% of the world garment production in 2006.
