Public Private Partnership (PPP) in metro rail projects not only bring in the requisite funds but will also provide expertise, efficiency and advanced technological inputs, a Government official said.
?PPP model is being chosen as the prefered mode for several rail-based transit projects in many countries, including China. But in India our experience so far is rather limited,? MMRDA?s Director, Mass Rapid Transit System G R Madan, said in his presentation on infrastructure at a conference here today.
Madan said that China is planning for 500 kilometres of metro rail projects in the next 5-years that would translate into an average of 25 kilometres per quarter.
?But we are planning 29 kilometres of metro rail in Mumbai for the last several years and we could not complete a single kilometre as yet,? he said.
Fund requirements for metro rail projects were extremely high, he said.
?The rail-based transit systems have a much higher capacity and are more energy-efficient, faster and eco-friendly but are highly capital-intensive. All million-plus cities must plan for rail-based transit fully integrated with other modes of transport,? Madan said.
