In a show of rare honesty, two impoverished men submitted to the police Rs 1.5 lakh in cash and 17 mobile phones they found from the train accident site here in Birbhum district.
Alam Khan and Salem Sheikh were among those who first came to the spot after hearing the deafening sound of the Uttarbanga Express ramming into the Vananchal Express, police said.
While rescuing the accident victims, they stumbled upon a cloth bundle containing Rs 1.5 lakh in cash. The duo also collected altogether 17 mobile phones scattered around the accident site.
Police said Khan and Sheikh came to Sainthia police station with local municipality chairman Birendra Parekh and handed over the money and the cellphones. Efforts would be made to return the money and the mobiles to their rightful owners, police said.
