Not satisfied with the verdict in the Bhopal gas leak case, Union law and justice minister M Veerappa Moily said on Monday that although the verdict would have to be viewed keeping in mind the ?limited mandate? that the trial court had in the issue, it reflects the need to ?re-visit the issue of law pertaining to disasters such as the Bhopal gas leak?.
Speaking after the verdict, Moily said the long delay in giving justice to the victims and their relatives brought the case in the category of cases where justice delayed is justice denied.
?Twenty-five years is too long a period. We were monitoring this case ever since I took over, as the Prime Minister felt that too long a time had elapsed. While it should be understood that the accused used each law and every statute to prolong the legal battle, with the SC having to intervene many times, the case shows that we need to have fast track courts to deal with such cases. We must draw lessons from the verdict and take corrective steps,? said Moily.
