After a slew of handsets, LG Mobiles has dished out another mobile phone in its LG Optimus range, LG Optimus 2X, which appears to be stylish and loaded with features. It is a powerful smartphone through and through. The one that we received at our desk was clad in black and brown hue with matte finished backside. The look was ultra-glamorous and it won our hearts at the first sight only. Proudly written Google at the back of the handset increased the face value of the handset altogether and also elevated the excitement to probe as to what the Korean consumer electronics major has to offer.

The bodily features are swish and makes it a desirable one, flaunting a nicely engineered capacitive touchscreen with a resolution of 800 x 480 pixels and visuals thus are amazing. Beneath the screen are integrated four touch buttons for Home Screen, Search, Back Navigation and Menu Options. The touchscreen response for both is exceedingly well, however, after repetitive use, the touch buttons started showing sluggish response and had to be hit twice or thrice to make it work. As for the screen, everything is fine and even the slightest of touch works here.

Further, at the top of the body one will find a front camera that can be navigated or searched by an option in the menu. At the top left side, there is a Proximity Sensor, which shuts the screen off as soon as a call is received. At the very place, that is the top, there is a 3.5 mm jack as well. At the bottom of the handset?s body, there is a HDMI slot along with integrated speakers and a USB charging slot in between. The back of the handset is adorned with a 8 MP camera that clicks really nice images with utmost clarity. The video shot were also of awesome quality with clarity of sound. One can play high graphic games with ease and watch full high definition videos with no frame lag.

Moving on the applications side of the handset, LG P-990 is installed with Android 2.2 Froyo operating system and is integrated with dual core processor, which enhances the speed, processing and the overall applications? working. To add cream to the dish, the handset is a reservoir of applications like Unit converter, Calculator, World Clock, Alarm, Stop Watch, Document Viewer, Accelerometer, DLNA. Moreover, other embedded applications are also present, such as Car Home, Facebook for LG, Gmail, Google Search, Latitude, Maps, Market, Navigation, News and Weather, Places, Talk and YouTube.

Talking about the communications, the Gmail worked fine and data sync is also good. For SMS and MMS, the working was fine and offers ease as far as searching a particular message from a recipient is concerned. Other sharing and internet options like browser and social networking worked fine. Talking about the media options, the FM radio works well and the music player offers nice listening experience with headphones on; though on loudspeakers, it is a disappointment.

Overall, LG P-990 may excel but the hurdle is the brand. Similar configured phones are available with brand goodwill and spending R26,000 on a LG phone would be less feasible than spending the same amount on a brand that has its heads-up in mobile manufacturing.
